With so many boiler cover plans available in the UK, it can be hard to know where to start. The lowest monthly price isn’t always the best deal – and the most comprehensive plan isn’t always necessary either. The right plan is the one that matches your property, your heating system, and what you’d actually need if something went wrong.
Here’s what to look for before you commit.
What’s Actually Included?
This is the most important question to ask. Two plans at the same monthly price can cover very different things. At a minimum, look for annual servicing, a carbon monoxide test, and some form of priority response. Beyond that, check whether repairs are included, whether parts and labour are covered, and whether there’s a call-out charge or repair excess you’d need to pay each time an engineer visits.
Boiler replacement credit is also worth comparing – some plans offer a contribution towards a new boiler if yours can’t be fixed, which can make a significant difference down the line.
Does It Suit Your Property?
A newer flat with a modern boiler is a very different situation from an older terraced house with an ageing heating system. Older properties generally benefit from more comprehensive cover that includes repairs, parts, and labour, while newer homes may only need basic servicing and protection. If your property has an unvented cylinder, make sure you’re looking at plans designed specifically for that system rather than a standard plan that won’t cover it.
Don’t Just Compare Prices
A plan at £8 per month with a £80 call-out fee every time you need an engineer could cost more in practice than a £20 plan with no excess charges. Factor in what you’d realistically use, not just the headline monthly figure.
